Engine History
The Massively Powerful M100 Engine - the first V-8 produced for auto use by Mercedes Benz.
This power plant was first used in the Classic model 600 "Grosser" automobiles.
The 600 was a special order car. The target market: Heads of state and captains of industry. 600's were hand built
in a facility separate from the Mercedes production cars. Only long time highly skilled Mercedes craftsmen were
selected to build these incredible cars.
The 'Red Baron' 4-door Pullman Limousine began production in February and was completed in April, 1973 with serial
number 100012-12-001863. Only 18 of these individually built Pullmans were crafted in that production year.
The first 600 was built in 1963. The last units were built in June 1981. New 600's were prohibited from sale in the
USA after 1972 due to an unwillingness by Mercedes to install performance inhibiting emission controls.
The Classic MBz 600 could be ordered in a 5 passenger short wheelbase Limousine; 7 passenger long wheelbase
Pullman Limo and a 7 passenger LWB Landaulet convertible parade car. The 600 is the undisputed monarch of the roads.
In its sheer size and mass it evokes the grosser Mercedes of the late 1930's but truly had no real predecessor.
It remains as distinctive and awesome today as when first introduced. Many of the remaining 600s are the pride of
private collectors with an appreciation for the classic craftsmanship, advanced passenger car technology and a look
of distinction that even rivals the new $375,000 base price PLUS customization costs of the Mercedes Model 62 Maybach.
(Note: Maybach customization costs can easily equal or exceed the base price amount).
